Joby A. Hughes, recognized as one of the “Top 250 Patent Strategists in the World” as selected by IAM Magazine, is counsel to Ramey & Schwaller, LLP. His primary intellectual property focus includes patents, trade secrets, trademarks / trade dress, and copyrights. As a lawyer, entrepreneur and inventor, Joby’s legal, technical and business expertise is both broad and deep resulting in a legal practice that includes all aspects of intellectual property diligence, development, capture, management, licensing, transactions, litigation and dispute resolution as well as technology development, commercialization and deployment. He has successfully tried patent, trademark, trade dress, copyright, trade secret, and commercial litigation arising out of licenses and other technology-related agreements. Prior to joining Ramey & Schwaller, LLP, Joby operated a successful solo practice guiding individual as well as corporate clients. Much of Joby’s focus involved complex litigation and damages cases on behalf of plaintiffs based on a wide range of legal theories including theft of trade secrets, patent infringement, negligence, mass tort (including several pharmaceutical matters and the BP Gulf Oil Spill), and other theories. Joby is often called upon to assemble litigation teams, negotiate representation contracts, and provide overall management of all aspects of litigation, settlement negotiations and final resolution. Other matters involve all aspects of intellectual property transactions including identifying opportunities, negotiating terms, performing and coordinating diligence for, developing monetization strategies, managing the overall process, and selling intellectual property assets. Other areas of expertise include technology development, intellectual property capture, patent prosecution as well as development of specialty risk management and insurance products and underwriting criteria and protocols. Joby’s clients are diverse including start-ups, private equity companies and major public corporations advising at the C-suite and Board level.

Other relevant experience includes:

In 2004-2005, Joby was a co-founder of Altitude Capital Partners, a private investment firm focused on acquiring interests in intellectual property assets. After taking part in capital raising and several initial investments, he left ACP in 2006 to focus more on the active management of intellectual property assets and a return to the private practice of law.

CEO and founder of Litigation Risk Management, Inc. (“LRM”), a company that applied cutting edge proprietary techniques developed by him to successfully analyze intellectual property risk for Lloyd’s of London underwriters. LRM was acquired in 2002 by Marsh & McLennan, whereby Mr. Hughes served as Senior Vice President in charge of Intellectual Asset Management for the company until 2004.

Joby travels frequently and enjoys tropical as well as mountain destinations where he enjoys swimming, snorkeling and fly fishing, as well as hiking and skiing. He enjoys reading, singing, the arts and is an enthusiastic home chef and amateur wine connoisseur.
